2016 ( ) (oak vat) full red colour. The nose reveals black fruits, prune, with a husky, brothy setting alongside it. Black olives and airs of rosemary also feature. It carries some mystery. The palate starts on big flavoured black fruited matter, and continues with drive and fullness to the finale, where there are tarred, smoky moments. This reaches the finish still on the first momentum of the attack, is a bold and sustained wine. Serve in a large glass. 16°. 10,000 b. 69% Gren, 15% Syr, 15% Mourv, 1% Cins. Slightly deeper colored, the 2016 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Mourre des Perdrix comes from the sandy soils not far from the domaine and is 70% Grenache and 15% each of Syrah and Mourvèdre. It's incredibly elegant and nuanced, with smoking notes of black raspberries, cherries, dried flowers, incense, and loamy soils aromas and flavors. Deep and silky, with beautiful purity, it has ripe tannin, no hard edges, and a great finish. It should be bottled by the time this report is published and is a candidate for the finest vintage of the cuvée to date.

The 2016 Chateauneuf du Pape Mourre des Perdrix was scheduled to be bottled two days after my visit, so the sample was drawn from the final blend. Although I expect it will close down a bit after bottling, it was singing when I tasted it, featuring red raspberries and cherries, floral and spice notes and a plump, velvety texture. Just delicious stuff.

Dark, featuring fig and blackberry preserve flavors, this delivers a dense and steeped feel but also throws off beguiling perfume, ending with warm anise, incense and black tea notes on the structured finish. Rock-solid. Best from 2022 through 2037.

"En 1912, Eugene Maret achete ce domaine pour l'offrir à sa femme, châteauneuvoise et fille de vigneron. En 2013, son petit-fils Michel, aux commandes depuis 1973, a transmit la gestion de ses 27,5 ha de vignes (en conversion bio depuis 2012) à ses filles Caroline et Veronique, qui poursuivent avec le meme talent le travail de selections parcellaires pratiqués par leur père.
